Watch the process of making some custom G10 handle scales for my Ontario Rat 1! Quite a tedious process, but it was a lot of fun!

I got the scales from USAKnifemaker.
    The scales are 1/8 inch x 1.5 inch x 5 inch.

CoyoteBrown&Black G10 scale for ZT0550

I started with the Purple and a standard Translucent Green RHK scale and dropped it into the bubbling cauldron of smelly purple soup. FRN I was a bit more skeptical of leaving in a long time because I figured the plastic would absorb the dye more quickly than the G10 so I held off on the Ladybug until the G10 scale had been in about 20 minutes, then dropped it into the pot (the whole knife). Well, as I said I’d decided beforehand to make sure I didn’t get a light purple/violet/pink scale so I left the G10 in for 40 minutes (a full 10 minutes longer than the garment instructions). Well, frankly, I should have pulled it at 30 minutes, heck probably even at 15! While the scale is certainly purple, it’s such a dark, deep purple that only in good light does it look like anything but black. And in some light it looks like navy blue. In diffused sunlight though it is you can imagine (simply amazing), but I have to wonder if less time in the pot would have resulted in that gorgeous purple hue being the norm in a much broader range of lighting.
